The Story of the Discovery and Development of Yoga Nidra for Sleep:
I first came across the ancient yogic science of yoga nidra while staying in a yoga ashram in northern India, while I was traveling through south east Asia seeking yogic knowledge and wisdom.
At first I did not see the potency of this form of meditation to help insomniacs, or anyone suffering from sleeping disorders, but this quickly become obvious. What was immediately apparent to me about this meditation technique is that it was notably difficult to pass beyond the threshold of physical and mental sleep and remain awake.
In fact, most people fall asleep; it takes an ardent and sincere meditator to remain awake beyond the threshold of sleep. Yoga nidra can therefore be seen as an advanced technique of meditation.
After returning to my native country I noticed many people complaining of sleeping disorders, or challenges falling asleep. Many have even had to resort to taking pharmaceutical drugs to get the sleep they need. My immediate reaction was, ‘why not do yoga nidra and just not resist the urge to drift into unconsciousness upon putting the body and mind to sleep’?
I put together a yoga nidra for sleep recording, made it into a video and uploaded it to YouTube so I could more easily share it with my friends and family who were needing a way to fall asleep at night. I was shocked when the video went viral! Since then I have made several others, some getting up to 3,000 views per day.
The feedback I have received from my audience on YouTube and Facebook inspired me to continue. There seemed to be a huge gap that yoga nidra seemed to fill quite nicely.
